Salt Lily Magazine was born out of tender vision: to nurture a celebratory and intimate online and print space for SLC's art and music community. By showcasing this City's vibrant artistic diversity, we hope to invite others to participate in their own artistic potential. This magazine is a love letter to all the feral outcasts of SLC.

Healthy Skin Is For Everyone

Healthy Skin Is For Everyone

While working as a Beauty Consultant, it was my priority to aid people in proper care for themselves. Anything from makeup advice to skincare. Skincare became my favorite area because I was able to help a wider array of people with my expertise. I didn’t realize how many men and women didn’t understand the importance of skincare or the long term effects of not caring for your skin.

Did you know that our skin is the largest barrier against infection that we have? For this reason, a proper skincare routine is vital. If you’re a guy you might be thinking that you have more important things to do than care for your skin, but it’s just as important for men as it is for women.

We all know that men and women are different, but skincare is one thing that applies to everyone. While it may differ for both genders depending on hair growth, sweat rate, oil production, pH and many other factors, a good skincare routine can protect us against the environment. Dr. Mehet Oz, MD has stated that keeping our skin strong and healthy is critical because our outer layer maintains the skin's overall hydration and serves as a primary defense against the environment.

Along with keeping us healthy and protected from the environment, diligent skincare also makes for beautiful and youthful-looking skin. If you want to have healthy and younger-looking skin 30 years from now, then making good choices now will allow for that to happen. Youthful and radiant skin is a lifelong process. The sooner you can develop a daily skincare routine, the better your skin will be in the future. Not to mention, prevention is so much easier than treating problems that arise. It takes less time and saves you more money to prevent issues. Developing a good skincare regime can prevent you from having to see a dermatologist, pay for medicated treatments, or even possibly needing a plastic surgeon due to neglect down the line.

Let’s be real, when you look good you feel good. Your face is the first part of you that people see when they meet you. Clean, clear, and youthful skin helps you to feel more confident and helps you to keep looking your best. How you feel about yourself shines through, and having healthy skin can help tremendously with feeling great about yourself. It’s well worth your while to develop a daily skincare routine that cleanses, moisturizes and protects your skin. Diana K. Blythe, MD of Pediatric Associates says, “Skincare products should be free of scents or perfumes. Soaps should be gentle and moisturizers should be used daily.”

Any skin type would benefit from a gentle, non-drying cleanser, an exfoliant and broad-spectrum protection from sun damage. Make sure to choose cleansers that will remove dirt and bacteria but also moisturize your skin with emollients and humectants. Even if you never have issues with breakouts, a topical exfoliant such as a lotion with alpha hydroxy acid will remove sun damage and keep skin supple as you age. Last but not least, using a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays daily will prevent wrinkles and skin cancer. There is no time like the present to develop a skincare routine that works for you. Keep your skin healthy and looking and feeling amazing for many years to come!
